Install Viewpoint and fix an unresponsive O key

Build 42.21 · ZombieBuddy v2.3.4 · Sources checked October 7, 2026

The short answer

Check the ZombieBuddy loaded indicator at the main menu first. If it is missing, fix the loader and launch mode. If it is present, enable Viewpoint, review its Java approval and restart before pressing O. A Workshop subscription alone does not configure the Java loader.

Before you change anything

This flow targets Project Zomboid Build 42.21 and ZombieBuddy v2.3.4. Have the required Workshop files available, use the author's installer or instructions, and back up your save and any launcher file you edit. We do not host JARs, DLLs or repackaged mod bundles.

Java mods can access your system beyond the game. Review the mod name, path and fingerprint in the approval prompt; approve only the files you intend to run. Do not enable an allow-all policy as a shortcut for an installation problem.

The Steam tutorial now reports that ZombieBuddy is available again. That is not a tested end-to-end download path here: if your account cannot obtain its files, resolve that prerequisite through the original author before continuing.

Windows: match the launch method

  1. Open Steam → Project Zomboid → Manage → Browse local files to locate the actual game installation.
  2. With the game closed, use the ZombieBuddy installer and choose the launch mode you actually use. Its confirmation preview lists the proposed edits. Selecting Both covers normal and alternate launch.
  3. For the manual path, place both ZombieBuddy.jar and zbNative.dll from the mod's libraries in the game directory.
  4. For normal Steam launch, the documented launch option is -agentlib:zbNative --. Keep the final separator. The native loader loads the JAR; do not add a second Java agent just to duplicate it.
  5. For Alternate Launch, the BAT needs -agentlib:zbNative in its SET _JAVA_OPTIONS= line. Steam launch options alone are insufficient for this path. Prefer the installer's Alternate/Both option if you are unsure how to edit the BAT.

Preserve unrelated launch settings. A successful file copy is only the first half of the setup: start through the selected launch method and look for the loaded indicator.

macOS and Linux: the Java agent branch

The versioned documentation uses ZombieBuddy.jar in the game's Java directory and the Steam launch option below; the Windows DLL is not part of this branch.

-javaagent:ZombieBuddy.jar --

On macOS the documented directory ends in Project Zomboid.app/Contents/Java/. Linux uses the corresponding game Java directory in the Steam installation. Keep the separator and check the actual install location rather than copying a Windows path.

These are the native macOS/Linux instructions. They are not a verified Steam Deck/Proton recipe. If a compatibility layer is involved, include that fact when seeking support.

Confirm the loader, then enable Viewpoint

  1. Enable ZombieBuddy in the mod manager and start the game. Look for its icon and loaded version text at the upper left during loading or at the menu.
  2. Enable Project Viewpoint. The current community tutorial also uses the author's linked 6244 3D model pack for object models.
  3. Review the Java approval prompt, then restart the game with the chosen mods enabled.
  4. Load a backed-up or test save and press O. If the camera changes, continue to camera controls and presets.

If setup is stuck and the mouse cannot reach its controls, the Viewpoint author recommends disabling Options → UI → Lock Cursor to Window from the main menu.

Use the symptom to choose your next step

Camera changes, objects look wrongCheck the model pack linked by the author before assuming the loader failed.

The Viewpoint author asks for Zomboid/console.txt, GPU/preset and a description or screenshot. Look for lines beginning with [Viewpoint]. Share logs after reviewing them for personal information. Change one variable at a time on a backed-up test save; do not remove unrelated mods from your main save as a blind first step.

Undo the loader setup

Close the game first. The installer has an Uninstall ZombieBuddy option with a preview. The manual uninstall documentation removes the ZombieBuddy launch option and its copied runtime files, including a pending ZombieBuddy.jar.new when present. Windows also removes zbNative.dll.

If you edited the Alternate Launch BAT, restore the matching agent change from your backup before starting without the DLL. Do not assume that clearing only Steam launch options undoes a BAT edit. The optional .zombie_buddy configuration reset also removes saved approvals and caches; it is not required just to disable Viewpoint.
