Viewpoint controller controls: loot, switch view and check conflicts

Build 42.21 · Viewpoint alpha-0.1.6 · Sources checked October 11, 2026

The short answer

In alpha-0.1.6, the author lists D-pad selection, A to take or interact, X to take all and Y to open the loot window. Switch views through the Back-button wheel. These are defaults; inspect your current bindings before adding a community layout on top.

Confirm the new core before changing a layout

Older Viewpoint videos and companion pages may predate native controller support. First confirm the core version, that ZombieBuddy loaded and that the camera switches. A recognized controller in the base game does not prove a separate Java companion loaded.

Use the platform and loader checklist for Steam Deck. This page covers documented core controls; it is not a verified Proton installation recipe or a console release announcement.

Rehearse the defaults away from combat

  1. Use a test world or safe container with a few disposable items.
  2. Select with the D-pad, use A for the selected take/interact action, and check where the item went.
  3. Check X only when you intend to take all. Use Y to open the loot window for deliberate inventory work.
  4. Open the Back-button wheel and confirm the view you choose. Test vehicle looking separately while parked.
  5. Record any changed bindings in the current setup menu before relying on them in combat.

One press activates two things

The release switches between controller and keyboard/mouse controls as you use them. A layout that emulates keyboard keys can also activate a keyboard binding; a double action is not enough to identify which layer caused it.

Note the physical button, any Steam Input mapping and the core/companion bindings. On a backed-up test configuration, compare the core with optional input add-ons disabled while keeping required dependencies. Change one mapping at a time. Do not reset every controller configuration or remove the loader to investigate one button.

Viewpoint turns off in split-screen

The author explicitly says Viewpoint switches off during split-screen and restores the previous view afterward if it was on. Treat that as current behavior rather than immediately reinstalling the camera. Single-player, online multiplayer and local split-screen are different checks.

A useful controller report

Include the controller model, operating system, core version, the physical button and configured action, whether Steam Input remaps it, and whether keyboard/mouse performs the same action. We have not tested each controller or input companion. The author’s controller aim-assist statement is not a complete account of every weapon add-on.
