Viewpoint AMD black water and crashes: check alpha-0.1.6.1

Build 42.21 · Viewpoint alpha-0.1.6.1 hotfix checked October 16, 2026

The short answer

Check the original Viewpoint item for alpha-0.1.6.1, the October 15 hotfix. Its author lists fixes for black water on some AMD GPUs, a crash previously requiring Medium or lower, vehicle/player jitter and an ImGui UI memory leak. These are specific fixes, not a promise that all AMD performance problems are solved.

Match the symptom before changing hardware settings

This is a Viewpoint mod update, not a new Project Zomboid base-game build. The author’s hotfix note concerns these cases:

  • Water renders black on some AMD graphics cards.
  • Some AMD setups crash above a Medium graphics preset.
  • The player or vehicles visibly jitter.
  • ImGui interfaces leak memory.

The note does not provide a complete GPU list, an FPS benchmark or a guarantee about every source of RAM growth. A Reddit report from a GTX 1660 user also describes poor performance in the base game; that is not evidence that an AMD-specific fix applies to their machine.

Update the original item, then restart

  1. Close the game and back up the world and current settings.
  2. Open the original Project Viewpoint Workshop page, ID 3809306528, and compare its latest change notes with alpha-0.1.6.1. Let Steam finish the item update before launching.
  3. Fully restart the game. Record the actual loaded mod version or available log information; the website’s date alone does not establish which files your PC loaded.
  4. Use a separate test world and the same location, camera and preset to compare the affected symptom.

If Steam still supplies an older copy, keep the working backup and check the implicated item and log. Do not install an anonymous repack or clear every Workshop subscription to force this one update. If the loader itself stopped working, follow the loader recovery guide.

Decide whether this fixed your particular problem

For black water, revisit the same water scene. For jitter, repeat a short walking or driving route. For the preset crash, keep a known working baseline and change one preset only on the test world. The previous Medium workaround is a diagnostic clue, not a permanent rule for every AMD card.

For memory growth, note whether it occurs while using a particular interface and compare a similar-duration session after updating. Overall process memory is not interchangeable with Java heap allocation. A large number by itself does not identify this ImGui issue; do not copy an oversized RAM allocation from a comment as the hotfix.

Success means the original symptom no longer occurs under the compared conditions. If it remains, record GPU, game/core/add-on versions, preset, steps and console.txt. The responsible author can assess that report; we have not tested your hardware.

Use the right next diagnostic

If the game also stutters without Viewpoint, compare that baseline separately. For general slow frames or a blurry image, use the existing FPS and blur flow. For FSR, XeSS, DLSS or frame generation, use the reconstruction comparison; a rendered-frame counter is not proof of lower input latency.

The hotfix does not certify old external Java add-ons. Keep optional companions out of a minimal reproduction, preserving required dependencies, and add them back one at a time.
